Resilience Based Practice: Signs of Safety Training

Barnet Family Services vision is focused on making Barnet an event better place to live for all families through our Family Friendly Barnet: Resilient Families, Resilient Children approach. Using our resilience based practice model it is our ambition to make sure all children are safe, develop and thrive. Our model is underpinned by a clear set of values that drive our work and we are making sure that practitioners have the right “tool kit” to improve outcomes for children. This will be delivered via a clear practice framework using a variety of evidence based interventions that will build on family strengths enhancing resilience.

The Signs of Safety approach has been chosen as an important part of our practice tool kit and a structured implementation process is now commencing. This includes providing a programme of training for Family Services staff and partners, followed by delivery of work place based support for social workers.  This will ensure application in practice with families and encourage embedding of the model.

 What is Signs of Safety?

Signs of Safety is a whole system/service approach intended to help practitioners with risk assessment and safety planning in particular with child
protection cases. It is an innovative, strengths-based and safety-organised approach to casework which puts the participation of families and front line practitioners at its heart. Initially created in Western Australia by Andrew Turnell and Steve Edwards Signs of Safety is now widely used internationally and forms part of the UK governments innovation approach to children’s social care.

Code: BFS/21/123 Signs of Safety Multi-Agency Briefing Workshop

Signs of Safety is an innovative, strength-based approach to facilitating family change across the continuum of need from early help to high risk child protection. It provides a methodology to map concerns, engage families in a plan and deliver interventions where children will notice the changes in their lives. SoS uses ideas from systemic family therapy to motivate parents and galvanise both multi-agency professionals and the family’s own network to finding creative solutions to issues of need and risk.

Signs of Safety is a key methodology in Barnet’s Resilience Based Practice model and used alongside systemic and other ideas in our social work case work practice. It works best when these ideas and practices are shared within the multi- agency partnership.

Who should attend:
This event is for anyone in the multi-agency children’s workforce with responsibilities around safeguarding. This will include DSLs, Health Visitors and those in the partner agencies / voluntary sector who want or develop their skills in safeguarding. (NB Social workers should attend the 2 day practitioner course.)
